About the Exhibition
Animalia: Beyond Human is a solo exhibition of Kimberly Lang’s new paintings and sculpture featuring figures, animals, and hybrids. This exhibition, influenced by worldly travel, explores anthropomorphism and personification through an experimental approach with mixed media.

Kimberly Lang’s new paintings question our natural human-animal instincts, female identity, and social constructivism. These mixed media works are primarily black and white with faint washes of color that add a touch of sweetness to the strong physicality of dark expressive mark-making with visceral layers. Lang uses an innovative technique of layering shredded paper samples and rearranging them on the surface with a combination of acrylic, ink, and colored pencils. Portraits of isolated women, animals, and masks morph together creating a new identity that suggests the presence of “the other” using hidden images left for the viewer to decipher.

Lang’s new sculpture series has a strong focus on symbolism, identity, artifacts, and nature. These labor-intensive mixed media works are formed with found objects, casting process, plaster bandages, vintage ethnic fabric strips with jewel embellishments, tar gel, ink, acrylic paint, and custom printmaking. Lang’s sculptures are influenced by her personal travels and interest in Asian, European, and African culture and artifacts. The color and surface resemble a contemporary, nonfunctional, and esoteric version of Roku pottery with animal and insect accents on the backs of each piece. The viewer is encouraged to explore these tactile surfaces while contemplating and deciphering the cultural influence, time period, and unifying symbolism of the human-animal juxtaposition of these fantastical objects.

Animalia: Beyond Human is a thought-provoking presentation of visual works that prompt the viewer to question their own identity, human-animal instincts, and connection to nature within the contemporary world today. Please join us at ELB Gallery for the unveiling of Kimberly Lang’s new paintings and sculpture.
